Our Story: The Proposal

This post is a continuation on the story of how we met. Click here to see the first post!

Before I share the details of how Nate proposed, I need to share a bit of context. I enjoy lots of things in this world, but there is a short list of things that I absolutely adore: chocolate, cream soda, red roses, diamonds, the Salt Lake Temple, and finally, my niece and nephews. Believe it or not, Nate's perfect proposal included every one of these things! Nate put a lot of thought into the process of popping the question and it definitely showed.

I had just finished a long shift at work when my mom picked me up to take me to an appointment with my wedding planner at the Joseph Smith Memorial building in Salt Lake City (No, I didn't technically have a ring yet and I had no idea when Nate would pop the question, but I wanted to book my venue as soon as we had set a date!). Once we had picked out linens, seating arrangements and the dinner menu, my mom asked if she could take some pictures of me around the building so we could share the moment with my grandparents who live out of town. We wandered through the building taking pictures and eventually made our way outside to take some pictures by the temple.

As I walked toward the reflection pool, I was shocked to see Nate's brother and my sweet little niece walking toward me, carrying something in their hands. I wondered to myself, "What are you guys doing here together?" as they handed me a fancy chocolate bar and a card.

I opened the card, which read,
"Driving home from the Bountiful Temple, December 11, 2010:
'Nate, I kind of have a crush on you.'"
Those were the exact words I used to tell Nate that I liked him.

I looked up from reading that card to see Nate's other brother walking toward me with one of my nephews. They were also carrying a card and a bottle of cream soda. That card read,
"Leaving the garage after saying goodnight, March 4th, 2011:
'Happy Birthday, Nate! I love your guts!'
'I love you, too.'"

Two more of my nephews followed, carrying a red rose and the last card which read,
"When driving along the Boulevard, sometime in 2007:
'...I love her. I want to marry this girl.'"

At this point I was sobbing, my hands full of things I loved wondering what was going to happen next.

Then Nate's smiling face was walking toward me.

He got down on one knee, looked up at me, and said, "Heather, will you marry me?"

Between sobs and with what little voice I could muster I replied, "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"
(Any Pride and Prejudice fans out there? :))

I was still in shock when our families ran to us to congratulate us. Nate's proposal was more perfect than anything I could have planned myself. I will never forget that day!
