Are You a Quitter?

Whew! Where did January go, along with of the blog posts that were supposed to come with it?
Another semester has begun and I'm proud to say that instead of blogging,
I've been studying (mostly)!

I don't tend to broadcast the embarrassing parts of my life, but this semester marks the third time that I will have taken Statistics in the Family and Consumer Studies department at the University of Utah. The past two semesters I did so poorly on my mid terms that I didn't even bother with the final and I'm comfortable enough with my current situation to admit that I tend to be a quitter.

If it seems too hard, if I'm not meeting my own ridiculously high expectations,
if I become embarrassed or discouraged in any way, I quit.

"Give up" sounds more like the proper term.

So, when I tell people that I've failed Stats twice, I'm not being fair to myself. To me, the word "failure" suggests at least some sort of effort, but I didn't give that to my Stats classes before now. I didn't try and fail; I outright stopped trying.

But this semester is going to be different.

Why? Let me illustrate it in the form of a quote by Woody Allen,

a famous American writer, director and comedian:

"Eighty Percent of success is showing up."

Those are pretty powerful words for someone who tends to think that showing up isn't going to make the least bit of difference in reaching her goals.

So my question to you today is this:

Do you try? Do you show up? Or are you a quitter?
Don't give up. Remember, success is only achieved when you show up!

  1. Stats is never fun :P I failed it when I took it a year ago and I thought I understood it so well. It was so frustrating and postponed me getting my associates by two semesters and I was upset. I didn't even bother trying again, I just took college algebra and called it good :P

    1. I totally understand your frustration! My stats fiasco has put me behind about a year now... So disappointing. That is awesome that your program allowed you to take college algebra instead, I wish I could do that. Stupid college requirements!!

  2. I'm totally going to brag here but I PASSED my stats class my FRESHMAN year of college. Now I'm not saying this to make you feel badly, but it is honestly my biggest accomplishment school-wise. I didn't get an A, but I am seriously SO proud of my little B-. However, since I've transferred around so much I've had schools tell me that even though I passed stats I have to STILL TAKE lower math classes. So, yeah, it kinda stinks. But yes, I'm a total quitter. ESPECIALLY with math. Screw you mathematics.

    1. YEAH CHELS! You totally deserve to brag like crazy!!! Way to go! That is so awesome. I just might have to ask you for some help when I inevitably have questions throughout this semester. :)
